Story Writing and Art Competition

About SWAC

The Story Writing & Art Competition (SWAC) is a popular annual event run specifically for members of Victoria’s ex-service community. It attracts hundreds of entries each year in the categories of art/painting, craft, photography, story writing and poetry.

The Competition is a joint initiative of Victorian ex-service organisations, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. It receives generous sponsorship from the corporate and community sectors. The competition began in 1962 at the Repatriation General Hospital as therapy for returned soldiers and has grown in popularity ever since.

Participating in SWAC plays an important part in enhancing the health and well being of members of the ex-service community. The competition provides the opportunity to develop new skills and interests and through sharing experiences with others, helps veterans to live challenging and fulfilling lives.

The Competition also provides entrants with an opportunity to have their works publicly acknowledged and where appropriate, recorded for posterity. Stories submitted under the “True Wartime Experience” category are retained in the private records collection of the Australian War Memorial.
