Group Activity 5
Modelling of brief intervention
Brief Intervention Practice
Feedback from Role Plays
Concluding Reflections on Screening and Brief Intervention

Group Activity 5.

Think about the concept of brief intervention and how it might work in your own workplace. Take 10 minutes to discuss this in your small group and we will open it up to large group discussion. Consider you own working environment:

How can you see brief intervention working?

How would you introduce it?

What types of brief intervention may work best?

What are likely barriers or problems?

Modelling of brief intervention

At this point presenters should model a process for brief intervention. Using guided modelling, presenters or participants can stop the process at any time, ask questions, clarify issues, make suggestions etc.

This is not meant to be a passive viewing process for participants – it is a learning process that benefits most from participant involvement and discussion.

Brief Intervention Practice

Group Activity 6.

Listed in Appendix H are basic outlines of typical Community Nursing scenarios.

Typical scenarios for counselling services can be found in Activity 3.

The scenarios give you a basic structure but can be added-to for a more detailed role-play.

In groups of three, use these scenarios to role-play your own brief intervention for alcohol. Each person takes a turn as Client, Interviewer and Observer.

The role of the observer is to provide constructive input mainly to the interviewer, and general observations. The role of the client is NOT to be impossible; this is a learning exercise.

Take 5 – 8 minutes in each role and discuss the process and outcomes.

Concluding Reflections on Screening and Brief Intervention

At this final stage there should be a general discussion by both presenters and participants—pulling it all together. This is the time for people to reflect how they may implement AS+BI in their work environment.
