VVCS - Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service
Emergency accommodation Centres
Veterans and their families are often in need of emergency accommodation for a short period of time. This need often occurs as a result of war-related problems. Sometimes these difficulties are so severe as to result in marital and family breakup, inability to remain in work, alcohol and drug abuse, changes in behaviour and on-going medical problems. All of these can result in homelessness. A place to stay whilst receiving treatment is another temporary accommodation need.
The Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (VVAA) saw the need to provide veterans with a source of emergency accommodation and worked with government organisations (VVCS and others) to establish a range of accommodation centres in most states.
Most of these accommodation centres have house rules. Commonly the rules relate to length of stay (often reviewed on a monthly basis), cost of accommodation, a ban on alcohol and drugs, and standards of behaviour whilst in residence.
VVCS counsellors have close links with the local centre and often have a role in determining the suitability for residency.
For information about location, availability of accommodation and cost, contact a counsellor at your local VVCS office who will assess your request for accommodation.
