Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a technique that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create an image of the inside of the head and body.
Not all Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines are eligible for a Medicare Benefit.
Because DVA makes payments in accordance with the Medicare Benefits Schedule, it will not reimburse the cost of scans performed on non-Eligible MRI machines.
The list of Medicare-Eligible MRIs is available on the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing website and can be accessed by clicking on the link below.
If you have been referred to an MRI centre which is not eligible for Medicare benefits, you may wish to ask your medical practitioner to refer you to an eligible centre.
