Comment on Comparisons

Age-standardised rates were calculated using the NHS data. These national data provide a reliable and appropriate comparison as self-rated health has been shown to provide a good indicator of morbidity38.

Female veterans are less likely than their community counterparts to classify their overall health as 'excellent' or 'very good', preferring instead to represent their health as only 'good' or 'fair'.

Conclusion

Responses to this question would support a finding that, according to a subjective measure, the overall health of female veterans is not as good as that of other Australian women of comparable age.

Female veterans' overall self-rated reports of their health are consistent with the findings from Part A of the survey, where twelve specific conditions were found to be in statistically significant excess compared to the general community.

Question E2
As a Vietnam veteran, do you have any other significant health or welfare concerns that you wish to record?

Female veterans reported 97 other medical conditions or concerns and 39 non-medical or welfare concerns. Among these responses some veterans may have reported more than one area of concern, or repeated concerns which had been cited earlier in the questionnaire.

The reported concerns are listed in Table 12 of Appendix C1, the ACNielsen report.

Question E3
Which of the following services were you in: Army, RAN, RAAF, Civilian Organisation?

The aggregated responses to this question are listed in Table 2 of Appendix C1 (the ACNielsen report). These data were also used throughout the ACNielsen report in reporting the prevalence of each condition for each category of service.

Question E4
In which unit/s or civilian capacity did you serve?

The aggregated responses to this question are listed in Table 2 of Section 5.1 of this report.

Question E5
What is your current age?

The aggregated responses to this question are listed in Table 1 of Appendix C1 (the ACNielsen report).
