Comment on Comparisons

The numbers of married, separated, divorced and widowed veterans are all lower than would be expected in a similar group of Australian women, while the number never married greatly exceeds community expectations. Four veterans reported living in de facto relationships, which is consistent with the age-adjusted rate in the community39. As health status for many conditions is related to marital status, this represents a methodological difficulty for interpretation of the results of this survey.

This finding is not unexpected, given the problems associated with locating women with both military and civilian backgrounds.
