The NT currently has eight MHPE volunteers with six residing in the Darwin region and two in the Katherine region. NT MHPE has both male and female volunteers. Many of the volunteers are also involved in local ex service organisations and have other volunteering roles. The MHPE group meets approximately four times a year to share information and support each other.
NT MHPE volunteers choose how and when they spend their time volunteering and many obtain great satisfaction from one on one talks with their peers about men’s health issues. Some have also volunteered their time to operate a MHPE stand held at local shows and transition seminars run through the Department of Defence.
In 2015, the NT MHPE volunteers operated a health information stand at the Fred’s Pass Show, the Darwin Show, Defence Community Organisation Open Day in Darwin and Katherine and a transition seminar run by Defence. Our MHPE volunteers also undertook a “Pit-Stop” event on Father’s Day at the Motor Vehicle Enthusiast Club . This was very successful and going into 2016, this will be a yearly event.
As part of the support offered to MHPE volunteers, DVA provides Initial Training as well as refresher training each year (called Recall Day).
Recall day is planned for 20 May 2015.
The NT MHPE volunteer representative is Ron Blanchard. Ron has been an MHPE volunteer since 2011 and is active in the programme and local community. Ron has a wide range of interests and welcomes direct contact from those wishing to know more about being an MHPE volunteer.
