Expansion of Non-Liability Health Care

The 2017-18 Budget included $33.5 million to extend Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) treatment arrangements to cover all mental health conditions. This means that all past, present and future members of the permanent Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Reservists with continuous full time service, now have access to DVA treatment for any mental health condition, without having to demonstrate that their condition is related to their service.

DVA Health Gold Card - for all conditions LHC treatment is accessed through a DVA Health Card – For Specific Conditions (White Card) and may include services provided by a general practitioner, medical specialist psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, hospital services, specialist PTSD program, and pharmaceuticals. The White Card also confers eligibility to access counselling services through the Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service – VVCS.

NLHC treatment is easy to access. Anyone seeking treatment for a mental health condition can make an application via email at NLHC@dva.gov.au or by calling DVA on 133 254 (Metro Callers) or 1800 555 677 (Regional Callers).   If preferred, a claim form is also available.

DVA will still need to confirm a person’s proof of identity and ADF service, however, a formal diagnosis is not required to access treatment.

How can you help your clients access NLHC?

If you have a DVA client who presents with mental health symptoms, and they don’t already have treatment coverage for such conditions through DVA, please encourage them to make contact to explore their eligibility for NLHC.
