Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program Awards 2018

Nominations are now open for the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Awards. A new national awards program established as part of the Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program to recognise employers of veterans is accepting nominations until 22 December 2017.

The Veterans’ Employment Awards will celebrate Australian businesses that are employing former Defence personnel, as well as veterans who are making a significant contribution to their workplace.

The Prime Minister’s Veterans’ Employment Program aims to raise awareness among employers about the diverse skills and experience veterans bring to the workplace. As part of the Program, an Industry Advisory Committee on Veterans’ Employment has been created to develop practical measures to embed veterans’ employment strategies into recruitment practices of Australian businesses.

Each year, around 5,200 people will leave the ADF. The Government’s aim is to ensure former Defence personnel can transition to the workplace effectively and smoothly and enjoy meaningful employment.

-   The categories for the awards include: Leadership in Recruitment of Veterans
-   Veteran Employee of the Year
-   Veterans’ Employer of the Year – Large Business
-   Veteran’ Employer of the Year – Small to Medium-Sized Business
-   Veterans’ Employer of the Year – Public Sector Organisation
-   Excellence in Supporting Veterans’ Employment
-   Excellence in Supporting Spouse Employment

You can nominate an employer for the Veterans’ Employment Awards until 22 December 2017.

Mental Health and the Military Experience Webinars

The Mental Health Professionals’ Network (MHPN) on behalf of the Department of Veterans’ Affairs produced a series of webinars focussing on the mental health of veterans and their families. The series is designed to help practitioners improve the treatment of their veteran clients and to better understand some of the unique experiences in this client base. The series gives insight to the common issues veterans face and how to better support them and their families.

The series involved participation from a number of recognized Australian professionals such as general practitioners, psychologists and psychiatrists. Each webinar has a topic that is relevant to the veteran community, for example; responding and treating post-traumatic stress disorder, promoting healthy sleep, treatment and management of substance abuse amongst veterans, understanding anger in veterans, and supporting the families of veterans.

The webinars are now available to watch on video, listen on audio or stream from YouTube. Simply click on the link and find the webinar of your interest under DVA Webinars and Podcasts.

Rehabilitation Success Stories Series

DVA regularly publishes stories about veterans who have experienced successful rehabilitation outcomes following their participation in a DVA rehabilitation plan, which often have a focus on positive psychosocial and mental health outcomes.

The DVA Rehabilitation Success Stories series provide insight into the challenges faced by our clients and how DVA rehabilitation assisted them to get their life back on track. We hope that through veterans sharing their experiences, it will encourage others to seek help and assistance.

This series showcases how DVA works together with our various Rehabilitation Providers around the country in order to get the best results for our clients.

Should you have any successful and sustainable results with any of your DVA clients in 2017 that you would like to nominate for this series, then please let us know by emailing us at

On behalf of the Rehabilitation team at DVA, we would like to wish you a Safe Christmas and a Happy New Year!
