Matters Discussed

  • Mr Brown introduced himself.  He will be Acting DC Tasmania for the next 3 weeks for Jan Hyde who is Acting DC South Australia.
  • Ms Manning provided a presentation on Veterans’ Children Education Scheme and the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme.
  • Mr Brown provided an overview of the recent MyAccount statistics. Mr McDermott made the observation that claims data on MyAccount was not always “real time”.
  • Mr Romalis asked about the relationship between the On Base Advisory Service (OBAS) and Ex-Service Organisation (ESO) advocates.  Ms Manning advised that OBAS officers did not replace the role of ESO advocates and that OBAS officers would refer serving members to advocates as appropriate.
  • Mr Lutrell and Ms Manning discussed OBAS services for part-time reservists.
  • Mr Lutrell made the observation that some DVA staff he had spoken to were not aware of the reduction in the portability period for some Government pensions, which is commencing on 1 January 2013.
  • Attendees viewed a DVD message from the Minister on the balloting of public attendance to commemorative services at Gallipoli on Anzac Day in 2015. Mr Robertson asked for further information regarding local Tasmanian commemorative events for Anzac Day 2015.
  • Mr Lutrell noted that a number of significant anniversaries were occurring between 2015-2018, including the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.
  • Forum attendees were disappointed that a poppy was not represented on the commemorative poster produced for Remembrance Day and the commemorative calendar.
  • Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) Round 14 and 15 and the Service Delivery Integration Grants were discussed at length.  Mr McDermott, Mr Lutrell, Mr Munday and Mr Romalis expressed strong concerns about the funding that would be available for Round 15 and referred to the Hansard from the recent Senate Estimates.  Mr Brown indicated he was not aware of any plans to cease funding for Round 15, but funding policy relating to workload statistics and welfare services was still being developed in consultation with the ESO Round Table.
