Anniversary of the Battles of 1918 on the Western Front

France and Belgium 1916–1918

The military campaigns fought by the First Australian Imperial Force in France and Belgium between April 1916 and November 1918 cost the lives of more than 45,000 of the 295,000 Australian soldiers who served there.

The enormity of the loss on the Western Front can be understood by reference to the number of lives lost in other campaigns fought by Australians:

  • Gallipoli – 8,700
  • World War 2, all campaigns and all services (1939–1945) – 39,000
  • Korea – 339
  • Vietnam – 520.
