Gallipoli works

Necessary works to protect and preserve the Anzac Cove area have been underway since August 2011.

Anzac Cove is eroding and without some action to preserve it,  it is likely to succumb to further deterioration.

If you are visiting the Gallipoli peninsula over the next few months you will see some activity in the area while these works are occurring.

The works include installing an improved drainage system and retaining walls to ensure the integrity of the road, stability of surrounding slope and subsequently the beach at Anzac Cove. Visitors can still access the beach.

The work is being undertaken by Turkish authorities and is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 Anzac Day commemorations.

Staff from the Australian Embassy and Consul in Canakkale are regularly visiting the site and monitoring progress.

Images of the effect of erosion on the site and an artists' impression of what the site will look like when the works are complete are available here.
