1976

The Repatriation Department becomes the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

1976–79

RAAF personnel join the UN Emergency Force II (UNEF II) in the Sinai to monitor cease fire between Israel and Egypt.

1979–80

An Australian Army contingent joins a British Commonwealth force to monitor the cease fire in Rhodesia (now Republic of Zimbabwe).

1983

An Australian contingent, mainly from the RAAF, joins the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) to monitor the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai.

Dedication of the Rats of Tobruk Memorial on Anzac Parade, Canberra.

1985

Seventy-five years after Gallipoli, the Turkish government agrees to recognise the name ‘Anzac Cove’ for the place on the Gallipoli Peninsula where the first Australian troops landed on 25 April 1915. The Australian Government establishes the Kemal Ataturk Memorial Garden on Anzac Parade.
