An official Anzac Day Dawn Service will be held at the Sandakan Memorial Park on Wednesday, 25 April 2018, commencing at 5.30am. The Sandakan Memorial Park is located on the site of the Second World War Sandakan Prisoner of War Camp.

The official Anzac Day Dawn Service in Sandakan is conducted by the Australian Government and is made possible with the assistance of the local communities of Sandakan.

The commemorative service is open to the public. The details for the official service are:

Laying of private wreaths/tributes

For attendees who wish to present a private wreath or floral tribute at the Anzac Day Dawn Service, there will be an opportunity to do so towards the end of the service. If you intend presenting a private wreath or floral tribute, it is essential that you please complete the private wreath/floral tribute registration form and submit this to Miss Jenna Rae via email at jenna.rae@dva.gov.au or register your intent to do so by phone on (02) 6289 6009.

Important: There is no capacity to receive deliveries of wreaths or floral tributes at the Sandakan Memorial Park. Please ensure that if you intend to present a wreath or floral tribute, you organise it in advance and bring it with you to the Dawn Service.

Detailed Program of events

Transport to and from the Sandakan Memorial Park are to be via attendees own arrangements.

Transport Arrangements / Private Vehicles

A complimentary gunfire breakfast will be provided by the Office of Australian War Graves at the conclusion of the Dawn Service. All attendees at the service are welcome to attend.

Please note: The local Sandakan police manage all traffic arrangements outside the Memorial Park. The immediate street around the park is one way for the pre-and post-service period.

There is very limited parking available at the park.

Weather Conditions

The Sandakan Memorial Park is a part of a Sabah Forestry Reserve. The weather in the Sabah region in April can be extremely hot (tropical weather). The Dawn Service is conducted outdoors and visitors are exposed to the elements, with limited sheltered areas. Tropical storms and downpours have been experienced at past services. Visitors should ensure they are appropriately equipped for hot, humid and wet weather. This includes the provision of bottled water and appropriate clothing. The surfaces at the Memorial Park can become slippery due to rain and humidity. It is advised that sensible footwear should be worn.

Mobility Assistance

Visitors attending the Dawn Service who are unable to stand are advised to contact Miss Jenna Rae by email at jenna.rae@dva.gov.au or by phone on (02) 6289 6009 before 1 April 2018.

Wheelchair transport to and from the Sandakan Memorial Park should be via your own arrangements.

What should I take with me?

A small day pack or small bag may be useful containing the following;

• Wet weather jacket • Insect Repellent • Bottled water • Sunscreen • Hat

Commemorative services at the Long Tan Cross site in Vietnam

The Vietnamese Government has advised that it will not permit official commemorations at the Long Tan Cross site, including on Anzac Day and Vietnam Veterans Day. The Vietnamese Government has indicated that access to the Long Tan Cross site will remain open to small groups of people for contemplative private visits without media coverage, but this may change at short notice. Please refer to the DFAT smartraveller advice regarding this matter at.

Consistent with long standing practice, visitors to the Long Tan Cross site in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province may not wear medals or uniforms, or carry banners or flags. Visitors are asked to behave in a solemn manner, respectful to the wishes of local communities. See the Australian Consulate-General website for further information.
