Funeral benefit

Under the VEA

Funeral benefit is a one-off payment under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986 (VEA) towards the funeral costs of an eligible veteran or, in certain specific circumstances, their dependant.

Under the MRCA

The ADF currently meets all costs of a military funeral of ADF members who die while still serving. In this case, no further assistance is provided through DVA.

For members and former members whose death is related to service on or after 1 July 2004, funeral assistance is provided under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA). See Factsheet:

Bereavement payments

Bereavement payments are non taxable payments made after the death of a person who received certain eligible payments from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). See Factsheets:
