A grassed and treed area at night with light beams shining behind the trees, illuminating a watchtower.

As reported in the Winter issue of Vetaffairs, Cowra held a long weekend of activities to mark the 75th anniversary of the Cowra Breakout – a mass escape by Japanese prisoners of war from the POW camp near the town.

This photograph (by Kelsey Sutor of the Cowra Guardian) shows a commemorative ceremony that took place at the site of the camp at 1.50am on 5 August – the exact time and date in 1944 that around 1,000 prisoners stormed the camp’s perimeter.

More than 230 Japanese prisoners were killed and 108 wounded during the escape, and three Australians were killed.
