Capability

Ensuring equal access to services is essential for the Department to meet the needs of its clients. This means that all staff, contractors and service delivery partners need to understand the Department’s commitment to CALD clients, and the benefits that this commitment will bring to DVA.

Minimum obligations

4.1 Cultural competency: Department or agency to have training and development measures to equip staff with cultural competency skills.

4.2 Data collection: Department or agency to collect ethnicity data on the culturally and linguistically diverse groups with which the department or agency engages and to which it delivers services directly or indirectly.

4.1 Cultural competency
Throughout the life of this AMP a training program relating to CALD clients will be developed. If available any whole-of-government training programs will be implemented. Any training program would be delivered via the Department’s ‘DVA-Train’ online system.

Ascertain whether a whole-of-government training program has been developed, if so, implement it on the Department’s e-learning system.

If a whole-of-government training program has not been developed, create a DVA training module on CALD issues. Feedback on any training developed by the Department will be sought from the CALD communities within the Department’s client base.

4.2 Data Collection
Statistics on CALD groups within the ADF will be requested from the Department of Defence and the Australian Bureau of Statistics as well as through consultation with ex-service and defence community bodies.
