Eight Australian Second World War veterans today honoured their fellow servicemen who helped liberate Borneo from Japanese occupation 70 years ago at a ceremony at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in Labuan, Malaysia.

Eight Second World War veterans will travel to Borneo in early June to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Oboe campaign – amphibious landings of Australian troops on Borneo in 1945 to liberate its people from Japanese occupation.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) is moving to new in-person service delivery arrangements in the Geelong region that will enable it to continue providing support for local DVA clients. This follows a review of DVA’s service arrangements across Australia, which included consultations about the future of stand-alone Veterans’ Access Network (VAN) shopfronts in Geelong and Tweed Heads earlier this year.

DVA has decided to co-locate with the Department of Human Services (DHS) in its Geelong Service Centre. This means the current stand-alone Geelong VAN office will close.
