Relationship with the Department

The Repatriation Commission is responsible for the general administration of the VEA, with administrative support provided by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). The Repatriation Commission has no staff of its own but delegates its powers under subsection 213(1) of the VEA to DVA staff. The responsibilities of both bodies are therefore inextricably linked and the Repatriation Commission has a vital interest in DVA activities and in the assessment of the appropriateness, effectiveness and efficiency of departmental programmes.

The Department reports to the Repatriation Commission on the administration of major programmes and the progress and outcomes of all major reviews, including Australian National Audit Office performance audits.
